Best San Francisco Neighborhoods for LGBTQ

There are many gay neighborhoods in San Francisco. The City by the Bay embraces diversity, which is one reason why it’s become the mecca for LGBTQ people.

There are some gay neighborhoods in San Francisco where you’ll notice the celebration of these differences more than others.

If you plan on renting an apartment in a gay neighborhood in San Francisco, we’re here to help give you details that would help you make your decision.

The Castro

castro san francisco

The Castro is probably the most well-known gay neighborhood in San Francisco. Nestled at the end of San Francisco’s famous Market Street and below Sutro Tower, The Castro is considered a hub of the LGBTQ community.

Historically, it was ground zero for a lot of a highly charged political turmoil in the 1960s and 1970s. The Castro is probably best-recognized for LGBTQ activism that occurred following the assassination of openly gay San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1978.

Today, it has a bar dedicated to Harvey Milk with a mural on the side of the building and is a vibrant and stylish neighborhood, with plenty of coffee shops and restaurants. It’s also home to The Castro, an iconic, vintage theater where you can watch a double feature on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Fun things to do in the Castro

Because of the Castro’s central location, you’re close to nearby hikes in Bernal Heights and gorgeous views of the bay.

The Castro is home to some of the best gay bars in San Francisco, along with local shops and restaurants that welcome anyone and everyone. The pun-filled, clever shop names also can’t help but put a smile on your face — Does Your Mother Know, Knob’s and Hot Cookie are just a few.

There’s also the GLBT Historical Society Museum, where you can explore the struggles of the neighborhood’s fearless pioneers.

There’s also the Castro Street Fair, held each October. It’s a tradition that dates back to 1974, when its founder Harvey Milk rallied local artists and vendors. The event is all about bringing the community together and showcasing artwork and handcrafted goods, and listening to music and dancing.

SoMa: South of Market

soma san francisco

Shorthand for South of Market, SoMa is an artsy district that’s packed with art spaces, loft apartments, design studios, independent bookstores and several popular LGBTQ bars and nightclubs.

Although SoMa is the working district of San Francisco and home to large tech firms, it’s also home to a thriving LGBTQ scene. These include bars like Aunt Charlie’s Lounge and SF-Eagle.

There’s never a dull moment in SoMa — if bars aren’t your thing, you can also check out garden festivals, yoga classes, coffee shops or Union Square for some shopping.

Because this San Francisco neighborhood is so expansive, it offers a bevy of cultural attractions, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), the Contemporary Jewish Museum and Museum of the African Diaspora.

For sports fans, the AT&T Park borders SoMa and Mission Bay. You can catch a game, along with gorgeous views of the city.

The Mission

As one of the trendiest districts in San Francisco, the Mission has a distinct flavor of Latin culture and is a popular spot among members of the LGBTQ community. The neighborhood prides itself on diversity, and many hipsters, artists and LGBTQ people rent San Francisco apartments in this neighborhood.

Although the gay area has gentrified in recent years, it’s still packed with cafes, used bookstores like Dog Eared Books, Alley Cat Bookstore and Gallery and thrift shops.

The Mission is probably best known for its incredible options for ethnic foods, including Mr. Pollo, Dancing Yak or Papalote. Most restaurants are decently priced, and it’s the spot to go if you’re craving a burrito.

Bernal Heights

Located atop a steep hill just south of Mission Valley, Bernal Heights is the preferred neighborhood of artists, young families and the lesbian community. It’s probably known as a gayborhood of San Francisco that has evolved to be more family-friendly. You’ll never see a shortage of couples pushing strollers.

The area is populated with community gardens, tiny cafes, fruit stands and innovative restaurants.

Bernal Park, an off-leash dog park, makes the area a stronghold for animal lovers, as well. The neighborhood is slightly removed from the rest of San Francisco, which makes it ideal for anyone looking for a small-town feel amidst a bustling city.

The Haight

haight ashbury san francisco

Probably better known as San Francisco’s hippie neighborhood, the Haight encompasses the message that everyone matters. This is what makes it such a perfect spot for anyone in the LGBTQ community to hang out in, explore or live.

The Haight is probably what someone from out of town would picture San Francisco to look like — with an eclectic mix of vintage shops, bookstores, dive bars and colorful Victorian homes lining the streets. Flower power, free love and world peace are general themes in this area that borders Golden Gate Park.

Locals flock to Haight Street to check out local shops and restaurants or to admire the gorgeous Victorian homes. You can easily hike to the top of Buena Vista Park for a fantastic view of the bay.

Shopping is also a popular activity to do in the Haight-Ashbury District, where you’ll find plenty of vintage clothing stores, music shops and cute cafes serving up fresh coffee or brunch.
