Summertime is moving season. As the days get longer and the time left on our leases gets shorter, individuals around the country begin packing up in anticipation for moving day. For many people, getting all your stuff from one apartment to the next is too big a job to take on by themselves.
You basically have two options in this scenario: either you pay someone to move your stuff for you, or you rely on the kindness of your friends. However, rallying up your pals for some free moving help is easier said than done. Here are a few tips and tricks for getting your buddies together on moving day:
Make It a Party
Moving doesn’t have to be a long, arduous process. Convince yourself that you are having fun by turning moving day into a party. This may seem like a challenge, given most parties don’t require the kind of physical labor that moving does, but there are a few things you can provide to make the event at least party-esque: music, food and booze.
Music Is Key
First, make a playlist. The key to any good moving-day party is a solid playlist. You are going to want to go for balance here. That means don’t front load the thing with only 80s hair metal. If you want to put some Poison and Motley Crue in there to get the adrenaline pumping, by all means, go ahead. Just be sure to balance it out with other genres.
And don’t forget to take into account your friends’ musical tastes. They are already doing you a favor, don’t make them suffer through your go-to karaoke song on repeat the whole day.
Once the music is bumpin’, prop open the doors and break out the beer. Ideally your moving day will be bright and sunny, and a cool 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a door jam or heavy book to make sure the main entryway stays open, allowing for easy access to the moving truck outside. The beer will relax everyone and make the day a bit more enjoyable. Though you may want to hold off until all the breakables have been packed and loaded.
Don’t Forget to Feed Your Friends
Spending the day moving all your things is liable to work up an appetite. Have the pizza delivery guy on speed dial and keep an eye out for the first signs of tummy rumbling. Be sure to remember to call in advance so that you aren’t waiting around with a buzzed, sweaty, hungry and irritable group of your closest friends.
Stave off hunger by offering some snacks during the packing phase of your move. Chips and salsa, carrots and hummus, or a bowl of trail mix all make perfect finger foods that your helpers can munch on throughout the day.
Moving help is one of the essential responsibilities of a good friend. Be sure to repay the favor to keep the good karma rolling.
