How to Make Homemade Cleaning Supplies

Apartment living on a budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing cleanliness (although if you have male roommates, they may want you to believe otherwise). Homemade cleaning supplies aren’t just for the Martha Stewarts of the world: DIY cleaning products are inexpensive to make and easy to use, and you may just help save the environment in the process! Here are some tips for making your own must-have cleaning supplies:

Homemade Cleaning Supplies: Windows

Forget the Windex–a bottle of this handy glass cleaner will cost less than 50 cents to make! Simply combine 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, 1/4 cup white vinegar and one tablespoon of cornstarch with two cups of warm water. Then, shake, spray and wipe!

Homemade Cleaning Supplies: Floors

To remove the dreaded carpet stain, spray a mixture of one part hot water and one part ammonia onto the affected area. Next, cover the stain with a clean white towel and take an iron to it. Repeat the process a few times and the stain will disappear! If you have hardwood floors in your apartment instead of carpeting, pour a cup of white household vinegar in a gallon bucket of warm water to create an easy floor cleaner.

Homemade Cleaning Supplies: Kitchen

When it comes to kitchen cleaners, baking soda is your best friend. To make an easy, all-purpose cleaner, use a funnel to pour one teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap and two tablespoons of vinegar into a spray bottle. After shaking your concoction and letting it sit for a minute, fill it up with water and shake it again. After allowing it to sit for a few more minutes, you’ll be ready to clean your kitchen until it sparkles!

Homemade Cleaning Supplies: Bathroom

To make a great tub and tile cleaner, grab a spray bottle and pour in 1 2/3 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup liquid soap (vegetable-oil based), 1/2 cup water and two tablespoons vinegar. Give it a good shake and scrub away! Rinse the tile after you’ve given it a thorough wipe-down.

Homemade Cleaning Supplies: Laundry

You’ll only need three ingredients to make your own laundry detergent. Combine one cup Borax, one cup of washing soda and a bar of soap. Grate the soap (and run it through a food processor if you have one) before mixing it with the other ingredients. You’ll never have to pay for laundry detergent again!
