Moving Tips for Second or Higher Floors

You’re probably psyched to move into your new apartment building, but probably not as excited about the fact that you have to bring all of your things all the way up to the second story (or higher).

Big items like your couch, mattress and TV make the moving experience quite daunting—but with the right tools and moving tips, you can make the process much easier on yourself.

Bring a Luggage Cart

One of the best moving tips is to bring along a luggage cart, which is a lifesaver if you have access to an elevator in your apartment building. You can pack the cart with anything from a TV and suitcases to large rugs, side tables and decor. This not only helps you avoid carrying heavy items all the way up to your place, but the cart also allows you to carry numerous items at once, saving you the hassle of taking multiple trips.

Enlist Friends

Another option is to ask your friends to help you move. Admittedly, they may not be super pumped about it, but what are friends for? The more people you have to help you move, the fewer trips  you’ll have to take up and down the elevator—or worse, up and down the stairs.

If all of your friends are “busy” on the day of your move, you can always hire movers to help you get the job done. After all, these professionals are used to carrying heavy items.

Bring Fewer Items

Chances are, if you haven’t used that waffle maker in the last four years, you probably won’t use it in your new apartment either. Help yourself out by either throwing out or donating items that you don’t necessarily need.

This is going to significantly lighten your load and make the moving process much easier. Go through each room in your current apartment and decide what you definitely need and what you can afford to get rid of.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

It’s important to select a pair of shoes for the move that you’re going to be comfortable in all day, especially if your apartment building doesn’t have any elevators. Make sure your shoes have good tread so that you don’t slip when moving heavy items.

Reserve an Elevator

That’s right, some apartment building will actually let you reserve an elevator for the time of your move, which can make the entire process go much faster. This way you won’t have to share the space with other residents, so you can fit more items in the small space.
