There are some things you just can’t avoid paying–and your utility bill is one of them. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to save. Suzanne Jones, the Vice President of the Association of Energy Services Professionals, gave me some excellent tips to trim your utility bill without any big sacrifices.
1. Kill the Vampires
Take a quick look around your apartment. How many devices are plugged in 24/7, regardless if they are being used? Those devices are still drawing energy and you’re paying for it!
Every year, 10 billion dollars is wasted on this “vampire energy.” Consider purchasing smart power strips, which sense when a device is not being used and can save you $100 per year. Of course, the easiest and cheapest fix is to simply unplug.
2. Temperature Control
This year’s severe winter weather probably has you reaching for your thermostat–but you may want to throw on a sweatshirt instead. You can save 3% on heating for every one degree you lower your thermostat. With the average utility bill for a two-bedroom apartment in the Northeast falling between $125 and $175 per month, lowering your thermostat only three degrees could save you up to $189 per year.
3. Choose a Smarter Shower Head
Hate waiting for the water to heat up to take a shower? You should–a family of three could waste up to 7,800 gallons of water a year, and that’s money going down the drain … literally. For only $30, you can get a Ladybug Showerhead Adapter with ShowerStart™ technology, which easily installs on your current shower head and helps conserve hot water.
