How to Get a Couch Through a Door

Moving oversized furniture like a large couch is not fun. It’s exhausting, expensive, frustrating, and physically straining. It’s a good idea to look into how to move furniture before actually taking the task on by yourself, especially when you’re trying to figure out how to get your couch through a door.

Getting your couch out the door

The biggest challenge when moving heavy or big furniture — like a couch — is trying to get it through the door. It may seem like it can’t fit, but remember, you got it in, so there’s a way to get it out.

Take the door off its hinges

While it may not seem like it, door hinges take up a bit of space, and removing them can make it easier to get a couch, armoire, dresser, love seat, etc., through the door. Bring a tool kit with you on moving day so that you can easily unscrew the hinges, and then reattach them when you’re done.

Experiment with different angles

Getting a large couch through a small or narrow door isn’t going to be the easiest task in the world, even if you’ve determined that the measurements work with the door. Rather than slamming it through the entrance like the Hulk, try moving the couch around at a few different angles and experimenting to see how to best get it through the door.

This may take some time, so it’s good to be patient (which can be easier said than done on moving day).

Remove whatever parts of the couch that you can

Some couches have removable feet, arms and cushions. Try to unscrew whatever pieces you can and remove couch cushions. This will take away some of the weight and make the couch much easier to maneuver through hallways and doors.

Before you start your move, see if any of your furniture can be disassembled to make the transfer a bit less stressful. Don’t forget that some drawers can be completely removed from the furniture, which is really helpful if that piece is particularly heavy.

The same goes for beds, dressers and armoires. If there are any items inside the furniture, take them out. You don’t want anything falling out and breaking.

Wrap your furniture after getting it through the door

In most cases, you’ll be wrapping your furniture to protect it (and your walls) from scratches and dings. However, wrapping can make your couch bigger which might prevent you from getting it out the door.

Consider wrapping your furniture after you get it out of your door. You’ll still be able to protect it while loading it, but you won’t have to worry about the couch becoming too big to fit out your door.

Think past the door

Getting out of the door is just one challenge, especially if you’re on a high floor. We’ve all seen that episode of “Friends” — pivoting your couch around the stairs can be a workout.

Here are a few other things you need to think about when moving your couch.

Consider the elevator

If you’re moving in or out of an apartment with an elevator, be sure to measure the door and width of the space to make sure that your couch will fit. Like any door, you may have to experiment with angles or even stand the furniture up at an awkward angle.

To be considerate of your neighbors, you’ll want to minimize the time that you occupy the elevator. Ask your landlord when the best time to move is and if there’s a time restriction.

Check out your apartment parking restrictions

Parking access can make a big difference on moving day. It’s a good idea to check out the parking rules and regulations for your new home before you start moving heavy furniture.

If you’re moving into an apartment building, ask the building manager if there’s reserved parking space for your moving truck. Some apartments have time limits or any other restrictions.

professional movers

When in doubt, hire professionals

If you have money in your budget, hiring professional movers could be money very well spent. Sometimes, they can even dismantle your furniture and then reassemble it inside your new place. You don’t have to worry about lugging around couches, tables and heavy dressers, and instead, you can leave it up to people who do move things for a living.

Make sure you book movers enough in advance so that they’ll be available on the day of your move. Keep in mind that most movers get booked up on the last weekend of the month. To save money, move on a weekday or in the middle of the month.
