1. You Know Better than to Walk Up the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Summer
The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument is literally smack dab in the middle of downtown Indy. It’s kind of an iconic landmark. No matter how many times you are in Indianapolis, you usually end up there– it’s surrounded by restaurants, entertainment, horse drawn carriages, beer bicycles built for a crowd and so much more.
In the winter it’s even made to look like a giant 248 foot tall Christmas tree. Summertime is an awesome time to sit on the steps near one of the fountains, eating ice cream and catching a misty breeze.
While tons of people make the trek to the top of the monument to the observation deck everyday– and everyone should do it at least once– Hoosiers know that you don’t make the hike up the 331 steps in the summer. The stairs are narrow and to say that it’s hot at the top is an understatement. Also, the elevator ride is well worth the investment.
2. You Secretly Love the OneAmerica Signboard
We are a state full of very punn-y people. Each week the OneAmerica Signboard changes and we notice. It’s probably easy to say that this is the most popular sign in Indianapolis! (You can even submit your own message on their website. And if you think this is all some horrible joke, it’s not. (They’ve had over 10,000 submissions!)
3. You Take Corn Seriously.
You may think that Indiana is full of cornfields and it’s true, we have a lot. We love corn. While other states are seeing what concoctions they can deep fry for the summer fair, we are walking around chomping away on roasted corn on the cob. (Don’t get me wrong, we have our fair share of the deep fried delicacies.)
Another corn favorite? Corn Hole! Our boards are staples at parties, BBQs, tailgating, festivals and even some restaurants. Custom boards and tournaments are totally our thing. When fall arrives, all of those cornfields come in handy for corn mazes. And don’t even get me started on all the ways we cook corn– corn casserole, cornbread, corn fritters…
4. You Love the Colts. Tom Brady? Not so Much.
The Colts are our team. Hoosiers know that the only real acceptable answer to what team do you root for is the Indianapolis Colts. Now because we are a loyal bunch, we do also accept the Denver Broncos as a runner up, when they aren’t playing against the Colts.
Trust me, it’s an emotionally conflicting day when the Colts are playing against the Broncos. We love Luck. We want the Colts to win. But rooting against Manning just feels unnatural. It’s all very conflicting.
But one thing that is not conflicting is our feelings about the New England Patriots. Because we are such a loyal bunch, it is completely unacceptable to root for the Patriots. Ever. EV-ER.
5. Reggie Miller Will Always Be Your Hero
It doesn’t matter if we are talking about college or professional, Indiana is and will always be a basketball state. If you ever want to get a conversation going with an Indiana native just bring up Reggie Miller’s 8 points scored in 9 seconds. Remember when I said we were loyal? Yep. We love Reggie. We will always love Reggie.
6. The Best Place to Spend the Summer is Victory Field
Victory Field is a summer time must. Whether you have seats or spread a blanket in the lawn, summer just isn’t summer without a baseball game.
7. Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches are the Official, Unofficial State Food
Some states have official state foods and while Indiana doesn’t have one on the books, everyone knows that if we did it would be breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches. And not just any kind. It has to be a bigger than the bun, giant breaded pork tenderloin. Go big or go home.
8. You Love Ranch
Pork tenderloin might be the official unofficial food, but Ranch would definitely have to be on the list somewhere. Legit Indiana locals know what restaurants serve “the good Ranch” and they put it on everything. And not just as a salad dressing, Hoosiers glob it on their fries and are big fans of it on their pizza.
9. Speaking of Pizza…
When you are craving pizza the first place you head is Bazbeaux. Around since 1986, it has been winning awards for the best pizza in Indianapolis since day one.
10. We are a Laid Back Bunch
Legit Hoosiers know that our downtown nightlife is simple and laid back. (Looking for more of a dance club scene? Broad Ripple is your spot!) We like good beer and good music.
Local Craft Beer is abundant and there really is a spot for everyone.
