One of the most exciting things of having a home is making it your own. I know that a big complaint among my friends who have apartments is adding our own style. This has been a hurdle for me since I live in an apartment complex, but there are so many fun things that you can do to customize and give your home character.

One of my favorite places to shop for really cool and unique pieces is at antique shops. Indianapolis has some amazing stores that are full of really amazing, funky, retro, and antique items that you can use to set your home apart.

The Society of Salvage is always a really fun place to stop by. It’s actually a shared space with Rewired Antiques. It’s a large building (7,000 square feet!) and full of really great architectural design pieces, tons of amazing light fixtures and one of our favorite things– letters! Lots of letters! I think it’s so cool when you see out of the ordinary things in a store like this and realize what a great decorating piece it would make!

The apartment that we moved to said that it was ok to change out light fixtures (just no installing new ones!) and that we either needed to put the old ones back or leave our new ones behind.

I quickly updated our fans and I’ve been looking for that perfect fixture for above our dining room table. Another easy and quick update you can do is to change the door knobs. How awesome are these antique ones?

Next door to The Society of Salvage is Midland Arts and Antiques. This old warehouse may not look like much on the outside, but it’s actually one of the hottest shopping places around. (Literally the hottest in the summer– there is no air conditioning and upstairs can get a little toasty!)

With over 200 dealers there is seriously something for everyone here! As soon as you walk in you are instantly submerged in one of a kind pieces. Unique furniture is all around! And get creative! This industrial cart could make for a great buffet or even entertainment stand.

Sometimes, the furniture is so stunning that there is no need to get creative. Decorating the walls of your apartment is almost as much fun as filling it.

I try to find unique things to hang on the wall that not only are fun and beautiful to look at, but represent something or someone important to me. Midland has tons of beautiful art work and beautiful antique frames for you to use to frame some of your own artwork!

Go crazy with accessories. Maybe go James Bond and decorate your bar area with 1950’s accessories. Find vintage dishes for your kitchen.

Or fill a shadow box with old political pins. Midland is another great place for light fixtures. If you are looking for unique, there is no shortage!

So many cool things can be turned into light fixtures too! I saw some that were made from things like bird cages and even one that was made out of an antique phonograph horn. If you are looking for chandeliers, there are so many to choose from! Be sure to take measurements before you come! You don’t want to find one you love and have to risk it not being there when you return.

Your walls are another place where it’s good to get creative! Think outside the box! I saw someone leaving with a really cool, antique car door. Could you imagine that on the wall of a man cave? An easy and inexpensive display idea is to frame vintage, antique, or otherwise just cool post cards!

Or what about hanging an old school map? Or even more unique is this life-size anatomical chart from 1918. (Perfect for that one of a kind Halloween display!)

Speaking of the holidays. I am a little obsessed with vintage holiday decorations! While most of the items weren’t out at the antique store during this time of year, I did manage to find a few Christmas ornaments. The colors are so fun and if you find the vintage mercury glass ornaments they look amazing hanging on the tree!

However you decide to decorate your home, be sure to let your personality shine! Pick pieces that really resonate with you. Sometimes it takes a while to find that perfect piece, but hunting is all part of the fun! Indianapolis has tons of great shops, antique stores and flea markets that are all full of treasures just ready to be found!
