If you live in a pet-friendly apartment, there’s nothing stopping you from getting a low-maintenance pet to love! A lot of people think that apartments and pets don’t mix well, but there are plenty of small apartment pets. If you’re looking for something a little more creative (and a little less maintenance) than a dog or a cat, here are our picks for the best pets for apartment living.

Small Furry Friends

Bunnies, guinea pigs and gerbils are perfect for a small apartment because they are primarily kept in a cage. They take a bit more effort to take care of compared to herptiles or fish, but are less maintenance than a dog or cat. Looking for a super exotic pet? Sugar gliders are squirrel-like creatures who are very social and love human interaction! These tiny guys live on fruits, vegetables and some insects, but do need extra TLC to stay healthy and happy.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Small and large amphibians can be great apartment pets–although it’s best to check with your landlord before bringing in a Burmese Python or other massive creature. Snakes, frogs, turtles or lizards can fit into your lifestyle, but it may take a bit of research to determine the best pet for you. Some of these creatures can be picked up, but others will bite or jump out of your hands quickly! Herptiles, the collective term for reptiles and amphibians, are incredibly easy to take care of and don’t even need to be fed everyday. Make sure your pet stays warm, and clean their tank once in awhile, and they’ll be happy as a clam.

A fish tank can be a big investment, but low-maintenance species can actually be a great stress reducer. Did you know that gazing at a fish tank for 15 minutes can reduce stress, and the sound a tank makes can promote better sleep? Bring on the fishes! You’ll want to deter from getting any tropical fish. While they look incredible, saltwater tanks are much more costly and need a lot more attention.

Teacup Pig

That’s right–pigs are great apartment pets! These little oinkers grow to be about the same size as a medium-sized dog (think cocker spaniel) and are incredibly clean animals. Whoever said pigs are messy never saw these pint-sized animals! To boot, you can train pigs to go to the bathroom in a litter box and they are considered to be smarter than dogs. Con: you may never be able to eat bacon again.
