Create a Vintage Movie Theater in Your Living Room

Decorating your living room is all about incorporating your favorite things into the theme of your decor. If you love old movies, decking out your living room like a vintage movie theater is a unique way to make the space all your own. You don’t have to spend a fortune to recreate the look of one of the great movie palaces of Hollywood’s golden age–you just need to get a little bit crafty. To decorate your living room in the style of a vintage movie theater, follow these tips:

Start with the Paint

Vintage movie theaters were all about glamour, so start the process of transforming your living room by painting it a rich shade of color, like burgundy, butterscotch or cobalt. Keep in mind that you want the the space to feel cozy and intimate, so it’s OK that you’re using colors that may make your living room feel smaller. If you don’t want to go all-out with the new paint, just coat the wall on which you’ll be mounting the TV. Remember to get permission from your landlord before painting!

Transform Your Furniture

Classic movie houses were enveloped in red velvet, so it’s time to start trolling the internet or flea markets for some new furniture. Chaise lounges, while not generally found in movie theaters, contribute to the vintage vibe. If you don’t relish the idea of replacing all of your furniture, you can easily purchase slipcovers for your couches and chairs in shades of deep red or black–just be sure that you choose a fabric that’s consistent with your decorating scheme.

Hang Photos

During the golden age of Hollywood, viewers would flock to movie theaters to see the greatest actors of their generation–everyone from Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant to Jean Harlow and Grace Kelly. Head to your local thrift store or flea market to find golden, vintage-inspired frames, and place black-and-white photos of your favorite classic movie stars inside. It will inspire you to get in the right frame of mind each time you enter your living room.

Start Decorating

There are ton of little movie-themed knick-knacks and decorations that you can make on your own or find at a flea market. You can even mod podge your own vintage-inspired popcorn bowl using old movie ticket stubs, or recreate a retro movie theater sign. Whatever direction you decide to take your living room decor, make sure that you stick to the same period of Hollywood cinema.

Use Film Reels

Nothing says “vintage movie theater” like old film reels! If your parents or grandparents don’t have any lying around, you should be able to find a few at second-hand stores or on Ebay. Hang them on the wall, use them to hold votive candles as a centerpiece for your coffee table, or create a side table by stacking them one on top of the other–just make sure they’re secured properly.
