It’s finally spring, and while everyone is starting to think about sprucing up their outdoor spaces, it’s also the perfect time to bring a little bit of spring indoors with the addition of plants and flowers. This is the perfect opportunity to think outside the box in terms of indoor planters — there are so many possibilities!
Using something that isn’t necessarily intended to be a planter or creating one yourself are great ways to add interest to your space, particularly this time of year. Here are some great ideas for branching out (pun intended) and incorporating some creativity when adding plants to your home.
Repurpose a Pretty Bowl
Who says bowls are just for food? Sometimes they are just so pretty that they deserve to be displayed all the time. Add a layer of gravel at the bottom for drainage and you have the perfect home for a handful of succulents.
Use Vintage Milk Glass
Milk glass vases are great for small plants, plus they are pretty easy to come by at thrift stores and flea markets. This is a great way to show them off if you happen to have a collection of them, or any pretty glass or footed vases for that matter.

Build Your Own Planter
Building your own indoor/outdoor planter is the perfect woodworking project for this time of year. With a few tools and supplies, you can build your own customized version for a fraction of what it would cost to purchase one.
Tutorial Via DIY on the Cheap
Turn a Giant Clam Shell into a Planter
Embellish a Planter with Electrical Tape
Use electrical tape to create an interesting design on a basic store-bought planter, like this one from For My Love Of. Get creative with the type of design for a unique, custom look!
Customize with Paint
Use paint to add your own custom design to a hanging planter, like this color block look from Jenna Burger. Choose paint colors that coordinate with your decor and add a fun pop of color to your home.
Upcycle a Fragrance Warmer
Use an old plug-in air freshener container or wax melt warmer as a planter, like this one from A Girl and a Glue Gun.
A few other ideas:
- Purchase a planter and customize with paint, stencils, washi tape, or shaped vinyl.
- Cute rubber boots make a fun planter and add something unexpected to your space.
- Pitchers, watering cans, or buckets make great vases or planters.
- Build a vertical planter to hang on the wall.
Hopefully these ideas have gotten your creative juices flowing, and you’ll be inspired to get your home spring-ready with the addition of a planter or two!
