Revamp Your Summer Wardrobe on a Budget

Summer is just around the corner, but is your closet still jam-packed with winter clothes? As the stores are packed with bright colors, flowy dresses and adorable tank tops, it can be quite overwhelming to imagine the amount of money you need to revamp your summer wardrobe. Don’t fret, because there are plenty of ways to turn that dreary cold-weather closet into one filled with airy clothes without breaking the bank.

Repurpose Old Items

If you’re a little crafty or you’re willing to give it a shot, you can take old items from your winter closet and turn them into fashion staples for your summer wardrobe. The easiest way to do this is with jeans. You don’t need too much of a creative side to trim your old jeans into shorts–just a steady hand. And the best part of doing this? You don’t have to worry about having to break in the new pair!

If you’re willing to take a bit of a risk to create a tank top out of old T-shirts, all you need is some scissors and an old shirt. Carefully cut the neck and sleeves off the shirt, trying to stay as close the seam as possible. Then, cut the neckline about 1 to 2 inches deeper, and trim the sleeves so that there is just about 1-inch of material left at the shoulder (cut into the back a bit more than the front so it lays better). Take one of the scraps of fabric that you cut off and use it to tie the back of the shirt together. Voila! Now you have a DIY tank top that you can lounge around the house in or use to work out, because we all know that exercise clothes are pricey.

Get the Staples

Maxi skirts, lace and floral patterns are hot this summer! If you purchase a couple of these items to add to your summer wardrobe, you can mix and match with things that you already have to create new outfits. You may also want to buy a few tank tops or simple shirts to add into the mix. When you are purchasing these items, think about picking out neutral colors that will match most of your clothes. With this strategy, you can buy just a few items to add in-season pieces to update your closet.

If you’re on a tight budget, don’t be afraid to pick through sale items. Stores put seasonal items on sale before the seasons even change, and you can benefit from raiding these racks.

Accessorize

One of the best ways to update your summer wardrobe without dropping a boatload of money is to pick out in-style necklaces, bracelets, rings, belts and hats. Adding a cute fedora to a simple outfit will make the entire ensemble look completely different! You can purchase inexpensive jewelry at places like Forever 21 and H&M knowing that they will likely be broken by the end of the year, but hey, they’ll probably be out of style by then anyway!
