Tips For Cutting Back on Water Consumption

Water is a precious resource that we tend to take advantage of. Whether it’s letting your shower heat up, having the faucet run while you’re doing dishes or keeping it on when you’re brushing your teeth, water can be wasted quickly.

So if you’re looking for a way to help out the environment, try cutting back on your water consumption. Here are a few easy ways to do so:

Turn Off the Faucet

This is probably one of the most basic tips, but also one of the most important. Approximately 2.5 gallons of water pour out of your faucet per minute. If you brush your teeth twice a day (which you should), think about how much water that activity is wasting if you leave the faucet running!

A minute of brushing your teeth may not seem like a lot of water gone to waste, but that certainly adds up. Next time you’re brushing, simply turn the faucet off when you don’t need it. The same goes for washing your hands. While you scrub up, decrease water consumption by switching off the faucet.

Don’t Pour Out That Pasta Water

If you’re frequently in the kitchen whipping up some pasta for the night’s dinner, you don’t have to pour all of that water you used to boil your pasta down the sink. Instead, let it cool off. You can then use it to water any houseplants that you have, or tend to an outdoor garden.

Get Your Leaks Fixed

A dripping faucet isn’t only annoying, it’s wasting water. After just one day of dripping, you can lose more than 20 gallons of water.

Time Your Showers

At the end of a long day, it’s extremely easy to just sit under the stream of hot water in your shower for a good 20 minutes. Showering for four minutes uses about 20 to 40 gallons of water, depending on the pressure of your shower head, so that 20-minute shower could be using up to 2,000 gallons of water!

Cut back on water usage by timing your showers. If you can, keep them at about five minutes. To make shower time more fun, you can play two or three songs that come out to five minutes, so you know that when they stop playing, it’s time to get out.

Fill Your Sink When Shaving

Instead of letting the faucet run while you’re shaving so you can clean off the razor, fill up your sink with some water. It will get the job done and be using much less water.
