Summer is finally here, which means it’s time for a family vacation. Whether you are traveling by plane, train or car this summer, traveling with children takes a lot of planning. Here are some travel tips to make your preparation a little easier:

Travel Tip: Overpack a Bit

Pack an extra set of clothing for you and your child. Unexpected messes can occur or the weather could change instantly. Being prepared with clothing will make you both more comfortable.

Travel Tip: Snacks, Snacks, Snacks

Children are notorious for being hungry or thirsty at the most inopportune time. Never leave home without packing a snack bag and a beverage. If you are traveling by plane, you can bring an empty water bottle through security. When you get through the security line, fill up the water bottle! Not only is it cheaper to pack your own snacks, it can be healthier too.

Travel Tip: Don’t Forget the Entertainment

Pack books, games and toys to entertain along the way. Check out new books from the library and find items in the toy box your child hasn’t seen in awhile. Of course throw in their all time favorite toys and snugglies too! Keep in mind that toys with lots of parts and noise aren’t the best for travel.

Travel Tip: Bring a First Aid Kit

Throw together a first aid kit—just in case. Bandages and children’s medications should be packed for unexpected injuries and illnesses. One minute a child can be fine only to spike a fever later in the day. Having children’s fever reducing medication on hand will save the hassle of tracking down a pharmacy late at night.

Travel Tip: Pack Plastic Bags and Baby Wipes

Even if your child is out of diapers, baby wipes are an essential. Wipes are so handy for sticky fingers, spaghetti sauce infused faces and even dirty armrests! Plastic bags will come in handy for dirty clothing or other messes. These items take up very little space and be a huge asset,

Travel Tip: Stay Zen

It’s important to bring the right attitude along with you when you travel with your family. Remember that children are notorious for surprises! So be prepared that most likely, things will not go exactly as planned. Expect the unexpected and try to go with the flow. That being said, allow plenty of time for these unexpected events and bring your patience!
